23-1 果Guǒ, fruit ( 一 字 一 太 極 100 stories of Chinese Characters )

Radical  23-1 Guǒ, fruit

“Flowers symbolise dreams and dreams are the fruit of passion.

Only hard work and care guarantee sweet fruit!

In the past, oracular characters depicted three fruits on three branches of a tree. The same characters found on bronze objects was modified to show one large fruit with four seeds and divided by cell membranes. This stylized form still exists today.

The character guǒ is part of many words, which refer to fruit, 水果 Shuǐguǒ fruit,果園 Guǒyuán orchard, 果樹 Guǒshù fruit tree, as well as the names of many types of fruit, 蘋果Píngguǒ apple ,芒果Mángguǒ mango,

百香果Bǎixiāng guǒ passion fruit.

The word also embodies the activity of harvesting and therefore “to obtain a result”. 結果Jiéguǒ   or  因果 Yīnguǒ “cause and effects “.Proverbs and expressions are so important in the Chinese language that even those imported from other cultures are appreciated.

種瓜得瓜, 種豆得豆

Zhǒng guā de guā, zhǒng dòu de dòu

"If you plant melons you harvest melons, if you plant beans you harvest beans."

This is a Chinese saying that means, “You reap what you sow” or rather “you can choose what you plant but you cannot choose what you harvest."

This is all seems perfectly understandable for a Westerner but what is strange is that the expression is used to express resentment or displeasure because something you expected to happen did not take place.

Life’s problems can arise because we sometimes sow one seed and we expect to reap something completely different.

In life, you not only reap what you sow but also what you care about. Having access to culture, material wealth or having skills or talent do not guarantee a good life but “caring” is invaluable. The proverb is significant but it is not Chinese at all, it is Italian!
